Psychotherapist - RP
Registration #009254
As an eldest daughter in a Pakistani Muslim immigrant household, I understand and empathize with the struggles of balancing the expectations of religion and the different cultures. Although each person has different and unique circumstance and situations having some similarities with a therapist can be helpful and also make it easier to take that first step into entering therapy.
I provide a non judgmental, strength based, collaborative trauma informed approach to help individuals achieve their goals. I encourage discussions about emotions, and help clients to challenge their perspectives, while also remaining practical and solution-focused when required. I believe in the importance of connection and the need for a safe space.
I approach each client with warmth and compassion allowing them to feel safe enough to be vulnerable. I understand that asking for help is difficult so I want to be there for you to make the process easier, and walk along side of you as you take this journey towards health and contentment.
I use an eclectic approach- meaning I draw form a multitude of modalities depending on the needs of the client. Some modalities I gravitate towards are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution focused, Motivational Interviewing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
I have a variety of experience working with individuals from various backgrounds. I have experience in supporting individuals with concerns such as depression, anxiety, self- esteem, stress, coping with transitions as well as navigating the mental health system and connecting with resources in the community.
I continue to take professional development courses to enhance my learning and stay up to date in the developing changes that are occurring in the profession. My recent courses in CBT have helped me get a better and deeper understanding of this modality which will help me better support my clients. I am also taking a complex post traumatic stress disorder course which is helping me get a better understanding of the impact of trauma and its effect on individuals lives and the therapeutic relationship.

With a passion for disability advocacy, Zoe is excited to join the Pangea team as Social Media Coordinator! A recent graduate of Carleton University with a degree in Communication and Media Studies, Zoe is eager to combine her communication skills with her commitment to inclusion and accessibility. Zoe began working with people with disabilities at the age of 16 as a Camp Counsellor with the City of Toronto’s Adapted and Inclusive Summer Camps—an experience that sparked her passion for disability advocacy and outreach. During her time at Carleton, Zoe served as the Programming Coordinator at the Carleton Disability Awareness Centre (CDAC) for two years. She hopes to continue building a career in social media management, creating meaningful, accessible content that highlights diverse perspectives and drives positive social change.

DEAF/BLIND ACCESSIBLITY
I am Sarah Colbeck, a passionate advocate, leader, and social worker dedicated to empowering Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families. Born and raised in Ottawa in a Deaf family, I grew up immersed in Deaf Culture and American Sign Language (ASL). My educational journey began at a Deaf program, continued at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf (SJW), and later transitioned to a mainstream hearing school, where I graduated with honors. My family’s legacy in the Deaf community runs deep—my parents and siblings attended SJW, and I later returned to work there as a social worker for 13 years. I am also a proud mother of five Deaf children, with my second eldest joining Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) this August.
I graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) and also earned a Social Service Worker Diploma from Algonquin College (Dean’s List). Additionally, I am a certified ASL instructor and have taught ASL extensively. I am fluent in ASL and English, with basic proficiency in LSQ, French, and International Sign Language.
Professional Experience
Previously, I worked as an independent contractor with Connect Society, developing presentations and training for Family Network Agency, which supports Deaf and Hard of Hearing families. I also collaborated with Kativik Illisarniliriniq School Board, providing training and awareness to educators working with Deaf children.
I served as the Executive Director of Durham Deaf Services for nine months, where I managed operations, led community outreach initiatives, and supported programs benefiting the Deaf community.
My social work experience spans diverse clients, including DeafBlind individuals, Deaf children with mobility disabilities, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing youth and families. I have worked in various settings, utilizing on-site interpreters for hearing children and teens. At SJW and the Sag Learning Disability Program, I supported students in need of specialized educational services.
Before my career in social work, I worked with Parks Canada as a Deaf Advisor for four years, traveling across Canada to educate employees, managers, and supervisors about Deaf Culture and effective workplace inclusion for Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees.
Leadership & Organizational Experience
My experience in running organizations includes managing a four-year Parks Canada program, where I was responsible for financial oversight, training, and staff support. At the Ministry of Education, I worked as a social worker and later helped lead the clinical team at the Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch (PDSB) to ensure comprehensive services for families, students, and staff. I have also served on multiple Boards and committees, including:
● Hands & Voices (Parent Council, Co-Chair)

● Belleville Association of the Deaf

● Media & Communications – Experience in media production, news reporting, and vlogging. Participated in commercials and public awareness campaigns, including the Rick Hansen Foundation and Dove Commercials.
● Networking & Public Relations – Well-connected within the Deaf community and frequently involved in events such as Deaf World Expo, Ol’ de Cidel Festival in France, and Toronto & Ottawa Mayfest.
● Human Rights & Advocacy – Successfully represented Deaf individuals in human rights cases, winning six out of seven cases related to accessibility and accommodations.
Mission & Vision
My mission is to empower Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, adults, and families to fully engage in their communities. My vision is for a world where Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals experience full equity and inclusion. I am committed to fighting for accessibility, educating others, and advocating for systemic change to ensure a better future for the Deaf community.
As someone who has personally faced barriers and challenges, I bring both lived experience and professional expertise to my work. Whether through social work, leadership, or advocacy, I strive to create meaningful impact and lasting change.
